Gateway ESX e4000 and XP
Recently, I had a customer who needed XP installed on a Gateway ESX e4000 - originally, it came with Win 2000 Professional. Putting XP on a computer is no big deal, but sometimes finding the right drivers can be. In this case MPC computers has purchased some of the Gateway models, and of course the drivers for this model are not listed on Gateway's website.

*Note: MPC is out of business.

The only driver that gave me any issue was the sound driver. However, if you "manually" install the driver using the "Have Disk" function, then it will install just fine.

If you have any questions or want a zipped copy of the drivers that I used, comment to this post or email me.

UPDATE 1-2-2009:
It appears that MPC is going out of business. Here is a download link to the XP Drivers that I used. If these drivers or this post help you out, please let me know.

UPDATE 2-25-2009:
Reposted driver downloads directly from my site. Sorry about that to anyone who attempted to download them and couldn't.

UPDATE 3-5-2009:

Added screenshot of audio "have disk" manual driver installation. Click image for larger version.

IMPORTANT UPDATE 6-18-2009:

Received an email from Steve at www.mpcdrivers.com and www.mpctechsupport.com - looks like he has a great site with virtually all drivers for the Gateway - MPC models. If you are looking for additional help or these drivers don't work, take a look on his site.

Best of all they are provided for free - like mine. If his site helps you out, make a donation to help him out.

Thanks for this!!!!
Bought several of these PC's from a 'going out of business' auction. No HD's or RAM. Like you I got down to the sound card. MPC is not helpful for finding this driver at all.

...one more reason to dislike Gateway.
Thanks for the help!

Hi russianred95,

Are you sure you used the "have disk" button to force the sound driver to work? I had the exact same problem, but the driver should work. If you can't get it to work, let me know and I will try to post a pic or video of installing the sound driver manually.

We were given *several* ESX E4000s by a local community college. Of course, they wiped the drives and we have had to load 2000Pro as that was the product code sticker on the machines. Have been able to scope out all the drivers EXCEPT for the audio. I don't think I can use your XP driver on these machines with 2000. Any ideas where I go from here? I've searched both the Gateway site and the MPC site to no avail.

Thanks for ANY help you can offer

Hmmm - I have 1 running as a linux server now and 1 with no OS and no RAM. If you don't find it in the next few days, let me know and I will try to do an install of Win2k.

Do you have copies of XP you could use? Also, Ubuntu linux installs very nicely on those machines.

I added a screenshot that shows you the steps. You need to go to the Device Manager first, right-click the audio device (may have a yellow triangle), and "update driver".

Really appreciate the help, Rex..!!
But..
You need to add to avoid confusion/ panic that when you check the "Browse" button to go to where the Soundmax file is (should be directory:\cabs), once you open the "Soundmax" folder, Then open the "smaxwdm" folder Then the "w2k_xp" folder & the "inf." file Needed will be there!
Works like a Charm!!!

P.S.

Just in case, like mine because of the Audio Codecs being Already installed & isn't one of the Device choices listed, just use the "Sound, Video & Game Controllers" device instead & continue IAW with Rex's instructions & my addendum...

Thanks, Again, Rex!

Thanks so much, Rex. Your drivers did the trick. Local governments, community colleges, etc. are unloading these E4000's, and Gateway/MPC left us high and dry. You made my day much easier!

How do you remove the side off the case to upgrade the memory without breaking it?

June 11, 2009 3:09 AM
Blogger Rex Moncrief said...

There is a release "lever" on the top of the case - you push that down and the side panel swings down and off. Then you have full access to the motherboard, RAM, etc. It's actually easy to do.

If you have any problems, let me know and I will post a quick video clip.

To get into the case there is a screw in the back of the case holding the side release in place. Remove the screw and push the front pannel release. It sometimes takes a little finger power but comes right off.

Some drivers will have a setup.exe file in them. If so you can run that and it will install.

Some drivers you will need to use device manager to locate a flagged (missing driver), right-click it, and upgrade driver. Then you will need to find the unzipped driver for that device.

Here is a good tutorial:

The audio driver was super handy. Just got Windows 7 running on one of these (got it for $25 from my school computer garage sale). In case anyone else has to do it:

This audio chipset driver doesn't install right even with compatibility mode. But..if you do a manual driver install (Browse the driver manually) and point it the the .inf file in one of the sound driver subfolders win7 32bit installed it fine. Video driver - download the latest winXP Intel video chipset driver (Intel 865G). Run in XP compatibility mode as administrator and it installs fine.

I also have several of these Gateway E4000 computers. I had to completely wipe it out and reinstall Windows XP. I am down to the Ethernet Controller and Multimedia Audio Controller drivers. Since I can't get to the Internet yet on that machine, where would I find the driver for the Ethernet?

You will need to use a computer that has network (Internet) access to download the driver. Then use a USB drive or something to copy the files to the Gateway.

Did you try the ethernet driver from these? After you download and unzip it, its the LAN-9532051.exe self-extractor.

Rex, great blog you have going here. Unlike most others I haven't had any problems getting the drivers but I have a different problem. Whenever I attach a device via a USB port the pc reboots. It didn't do that initially but is occuring now and I haven't an idea as to what the problem is. Do you have any idea?
